John & Irene Johnson
with EFCA International Missions
Country Info
Although England once had great preachers and sent out great missionaries, today it is largely apathetic towards things of the Lord. Approximately 10% of the population goes to church (of any sort) on any given Sunday and only about 2% are evangelical. There are more registered witches and fortune tellers than clergy. C.S. Lewis once said that England is now a post-Christian nation. There are also many other religions prevalent in the British society, including roughly 2 million Muslims.
Birmingham, England's "Second City", is located in the "West Midlands" where the Industrial Revolution began. Like the rest of the country, there are few true followers of Jesus Christ.
One in five of Birmingham's one million residents is Muslim, Hindu, or Sikh, most having roots in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh or Yemen. There are over 100 registered mosques in the city, numerous temples and gurdwaras, and over 20 official languages represented.
Background
The EFCA-IM works in partnership with the British Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches and is involved in church planting. John is the City Team leader.
Ministry Description
John and Irene are very active in relational evangelism, opening their home to neighbors and people they meet on the street, through door-to-door evangelism, and through "Jesus" video distribution and follow up.
They also are involved in volunteer work to help meet community needs. Irene has worked with homework clubs, English classes, and presently does volunteer work at a Christian pregnancy advice center.
